Hiwi the Kiwi

On Thursday  28th of November the whole school went to hiwi the kiwi at the hall, the Minstrel (a singer) taught us about sustainable fishing. Mrs Minstrel was there too. Fishing is fun, BUT you need to follow the rules!

The first rule is that you need to hold the fish with a wet towel.I think you need to hold a fish with wet towel is because if you don’t hold the ofish with a wet towel it will die and if you hold the fish with a wet towel it won’t die because it is in water. You will not have time to check if it is under 30 centimeters or not

The second rule is that you need to bring a ruler with you.so you can check the size of your fish. You can’t catch a fish that is under 30 centimeters and you can’t catch a big female fish because it has babies and you can’t catch a fish that is under 30 centimeters. But male fish can be caught.

Thirdly, every time you go fishing, put your fish in a bucket of salted ice to keep it fresh and sometimes you get salt water from the sea and put it into the bucket. You don’t want to eat rotten fish do you?

The last but also the most important reason is that ALWAYS WEAR A LIFE JACKET. Some people say that they will not wear the jacket until something bad happens. This is wrong. A life jacket keeps you afloat on the water if you fall out of the boat. If you don’t wear a life jacket you will drown and die. Once an 8-year-old girl went boating with her dad. Her dad didn’t wear the life jacket and kept it at the front of the boat. When the boat tipped over, the motor kept running, with the dad’s life jacket! This explains the importance of wearing one.

The Minstrel also said don’t throw rubbish in the sea because the fish or birds might eat it and die.The Minstrel also said he will be angry if we throw rubbish in the sea.
